Greek to Me
Greek to Me
"Greek to Me" was first produced at the Fault Line Theatre in 2005.
Below is a sample from the script. It is (very) loosley based on Medea.
Photos are from Fault Line rehearsals...
A half-dark stage. Moaning from offstage. Then silence for a moment, and Nurse enters.
NURSE
Woefully my mistress cries within, for her heart has been twice wrenched in twain. The fair Alicia has this day lost both her love and her station in this our kingdom, and her sorrow knows no bounds. For many hours now she has closed herself in her chamber where she weeps as though her cries would split the sky and make it rain down balm from above.
More moaning from off. A chorus of girls enters.
CHORUS
Good nurse, what sorrow brings forth this anguished wailing from within the chamber of mistress Alicia? Is she not well?
LANA
From far across the mall where we shopped for new mobile phone covers we heard her cries…
BECKI
and came at once to offer our counsel...
ANABEL
and ice cream.
NURSE
Alas, your methods are most generous but Alicia refuses the company of any who seek her visage. She does not eat nor sleep nor watch “The OC.”
SHARA
But what misfortune brings this sorrow upon our dear friend?
NURSE
Know you not, fair one? Were you not there to witness her very downfall before those she believed to be her friends? (To all) Last night, as you may by now have heard, the mighty lord Jason cast Alicia from himself for the love of another woman.
The chorus gasps and whispers amongst themselves.
NURSE (Con’t)
‘Tis sooth. After nearly eight entire long months of holy dating, after swearing their love to one another by mighty rain and dashboard light, Jason has betrayed his fair beloved and left her heart in ashes. (Pause) Lo, and as if that were not enough, so puffed and red with crying was her fair face at today’s cheerleading tryouts; so weary her body with last night’s quarrelling and sleepless solitude, that she failed to reclaim her place among the squad, and shall spend her final year of high school cast out from that elite echelon.
Gasping and wailing from the chorus
CHORUS
This cannot be.
SHARA
I saw the redness of Alicia’s eyes and their distant longing toward the heavens, the scratchy strain when her voice uttered forth the cheers, but I never knew - oh, is the world so cruel?!
NORI
Nurse, call her forth that we may offer our comfort to her. Surely her life must continue despite these most unfortunate events.
The others all look shocked at NORI.
NORI (Con’t)
I’m just saying.
NURSE
We must not disturb her today, for as her Best Friend, I fear the state she is in. I have never seen my dear one thus. Though her sorrow is great, her anger is greater and I sense that she may unleash fury on any who come too near. Especially Jason.
